In our leadership challenge this week, we mentioned the importance of having a business coach, someone who understands the sector that you can call on for advice and support. We often hear of established business men and women having coaches who guide them through, but such coaching in the early years is pretty much unheard of. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason we find is cost. With many early years settings relying on Government funding, money from fundraisers and such to top up parent fees, its no wonder that paying for a business coach seems extravagant.
Often, early years leaders will have support from other leaders, through meet ups, local support groups etc, but lets face it, they are all experiencing the same problems as you are. You can go along to your LA managers monthly meet up and explain you are having real problems recruiting, but guess what…so is everyone else. Or perhaps you are unsure about the best ways to market yourself, guess what….so is everyone else! Being all in the same boat is great for support and not feeling alone, but its not where you will find the answers to such challenges or where you will find someone to ask the right questions, guiding you to find the most appropriate solutions for your setting. Having a business coach is like having a buddy who has been there and got the t-shirt, someone there to guide you through some of these challenges, asking questions and encouraging you to think more strategically and holistically about your business.
No matter where you are in your business, just starting out or established and looking to scale up, an early years business coach will assist and guide you in running your setting by helping you to clarify your vision and develop a step by step plan or road-map to achieve your business goals. Coaches have years of experience to the table and their perspective on your setting can help you see where to prioritise your time, where to delegate and what strategic direction you may need to move into, all of this saving you time and money – well worth the investment! Depending on the needs of you and your and setting, the business coach may meet face to face or virtually at agreed times to support with the progression of the plan, to assist with any challenges being faced and to keep you accountable.
Accountability is a challenge faced by early years sector leaders and a critical component of business success. You will never see a football coach run laps of the field for their team and this is true for business coaches, they won’t do the work for you. However, the coach will help to keep you motivated, remind you of your commitment when the going gets tough, cheer you on and act as a sounding board when needed. They will probe, question, query, clarify and push you until you find the solutions together. They will call you out, be honest with you and help you to be the best early years leader you can be.
So what can an early years business coach help you with? Depending on your setting, a business coach my help with the initial set up, carrying out due diligence, supporting you with business planning and climate & market scans. They may support your through recruitment, identify trends in your retention and support you to embed an improved culture in your setting, reducing recruitment costs. An early years coach might support your personal growth as a leader, help identify CPD opportunities, or perhaps assist with quality audits and inspection preparation. Maybe you are looking to scale up your business or diversify in someway and a coach can support this progression. That’s the beauty of working with an industry expert coach, they understand you and your business!
